Members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Brady distributed Trick or Treat Book Bags at the 4th Annual Halloween in the Heart Event at Richards Park on Halloween night. Each bag contained several books for each child to take and read at home, pencils and notepads to encourage writing, and a toy or two to enjoy. Book bags included board and picture books and early readers for early childhood to 1st graders and chapter books and

nonfiction science, history, and biographies for 2nd-5th graders.

At the 2024 event, the St. Paul's Literacy Ministry distributed 430 bags with more than 2500 books.

The book bag distribution is an extension of the St. Paul’s Memorial Little Free Library that provides children free access to books. St. Paul’s, in partnership with the McCulloch County Mercantile, established the first Little Free Library in McCulloch County, joining a global network of over 175,000 Little Free Libraries in all fifty U.S. states, 121 countries and all seven continents. Little Free Library (LFL) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led Little Free Libraries.

The Trick or Treat, Take a Book event would not be possible without generous donations of children’s books from the McCulloch County Mercantile and the community. The St. Paul’s Memorial Little Free Library, a small red box sitting at the front door of the Mercantile, makes free books available for children to take and share at all times. St. Paul’s established the Little Free Library and reading nook at the Mercantile to promote reading in the community, increase

awareness of the importance of literacy, and inspire a love for reading.
